I was born in Sicily, and there, man is born an island within an island and remains such until death, even living far from the rugged homeland surrounded by the immense and jealous sea.

                                                         -  Luigi Pirandello

Palermo, Sicily, Winter. Angelo and Marcello are two inseparable friends. Both in their 60s, the two lead repetitive and lonely lives.

Angelo lived with his mother all his life until her death. Now he keeps on seeing her around his apartment, endlessly sewing a dress. During his aimless walks through Palermo, Angelo photographs the women he meets on his path, observing them while keeping at distance as one does with the unattainable desires.

Marcello instead spends his days listening obsessively to a radio he wears on his neck, commenting on the horrible news it gives. He lives in a house up in the mountains and takes occasional walks where he photographs piles of garbage as evidence of the world’s decay. A world in which his brother, who died a few years earlier in a car accident, is still alive.

Western is a study character about two men, immersed in a state of perpetual nostalgia and isolation, constantly at odds with the city. A city that is seen as if through the black and white of a film negative. The two bring us on a walk together, mirroring the beauty and misery of the world, wandering as two cowboys without any west to explore anymore.
